A search for a man reported to be in the South Tyger River in Spartanburg County has been called off.

A search team moves down the South Tyger River looking for a man reportedly in the water.

Rescue crews searched the river between Wade Hampton Boulevard and Highway 290 on a report of an adult male seen in the river.

An official told WYFF News 4's Marla Cichowski that a woman called 911 just before 2:30 p.m. and said she'd seen a man in dark clothing floating down the river, waving his hands in the air.

A half-dozen fire departments joined the search on the ground and in the air and water.

At least one inflatable boat with four crew members was the river looking for any sign of the man.

Searchers were stationed on bridges crossing the river, looking to see if anyone passes them.

Officials said the recent rain had swollen the river, making the search more difficult.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., the search was called off for the night. A scaled-back search will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday.
